2011 Annual Benefit Applauds Those Who Give

350 guests arrived January 26th at the historic Palace Hotel in San Francisco to honor the volunteers and donors who make the work of Glaucoma Research Foundation possible. Returning Event Co-Chairs Nobuko Saito Cleary and Gary Cleary, PharmD, PhD, greeted guests for a dinner and auction that raised $450,000 for glaucoma research and education programs.


LaFern Cusack

Mistress of Ceremonies LaFern Cusack of ESPN Radio was our gracious hostess for the evening. Mona and Ed Zander hosted the Ambassadors Circle Reception welcoming Ambassador Circle sponsors and guests including newly appointed Consul General of Japan Hiroshi Inomata with his wife Midori, Canon USA Director, Nao Imai, Union Bank President Masashi Oka, and ANA Manager, Masaki Yokai. Joining them were Honorary Host Committee Chairs Ann and H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD and Charlot and Dennis E. Singleton.

Research Progress Reported

President and CEO Thomas M. Brunner chaired the annual Research Overview sponsored again this year by UBS. Catalyst For a Cure (CFC) Principal Investigators Philip Horner, PhD (University of Washington), and Monica Vetter, PhD (University of Utah) described the progress over the past years and the strong impact on the glaucoma research field.

Moses Chao, PhD received the President’s Award from Thomas M. Brunner for his volunteer leadership of the CFC Scientific Advisory Board and Board member Adrienne Graves, PhD paid tribute to Steven M. Podos, MD (1937-2009) for a lifetime of dedication to preserving sight.

Board member Deirdre Porter announced the inaugural gift from Frank Stein and Paul S. May to support the “Frank Stein and Paul S. May Grants for Innovative Glaucoma Research”.

Catalyst Award


The 2011 Catalyst Award was presented to June Behrendt Otto, Executive Director of the Edward Joseph Daly Foundation, by H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD recognizing her years of service on the Board of Directors and the $3 million dollars donated by the Daly Foundation to advance innovative research, community outreach and patient education.

Board Chair Kuldev Singh, MD, MPH recognized Dr. Hoskins as the 2009 Catalyst Award recipient, and also recognized other Catalyst Award recipients in attendance: Michele and Steven Kirsch (2005), David E.I. Pyott (2006), CEO and President of Allergen, Inc., and Melza and Ted Barr (2007).

The evening concluded with saxophonist Bob LoPresto, whose musicianship was enjoyed by all. Special appreciation also goes to Board members Mona Zander and Linda Linck for an exciting auction.
