The Best Nonprofits to Donate To 2017-2018

On the United Nations' 70th birthday in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by 193 countries. The Agenda lays out current global issues and outlines goals for addressing them, including combatting climate change, achieving gender equality, promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, establishing sustainable access to clean water, and ensuring healthy lives for all at all ages. This is a great step toward a better future, but individuals still need to take action on their own to make lasting change.

Charitable giving can connect you to both the local and international community in a powerful and meaningful way, and it can be incredibly satisfying to see your donation make an impact. Before you donate, though, there are a few things to consider. What are pertinent issues in the world and your community this year? What current issues interest and inspire you? How does the organization of your choice allocate its funds and give back? This guide gives you an overview of some of the most pressing issues in the world today, and offers you a few examples of highly-rated and reliable charitable organizations working to fix those issues.

Climate Change

Between 1880 and 2012, average global temperatures increased by 0.85°C. This might not seem like much on the surface, but did you know that for every 1 degree of increase, grain and other crop yields decline by about 5 percent? Arctic ice melts along with the rising heat, and we lose more of our beautiful coastlines and the animals that rely on frigid temperatures. This is an issue that can and should be dealt with immediately, and there are organizations fighting in this worldwide effort:

Gender Equality and Supporting Women

Gender equality is a fundamental human right and is necessary for a sustainable future. Unfortunately, violence and discrimination against women and those outside the gender binary occurs in every part of the world. On a global scale, progress is being made in the battle for gender equality, and roughly two thirds of countries in the developing world are seeing equal enrollment rates in primary education. There is still a long way to go, however, and charities help promote equal rights to economic resources, access to sexual and reproductive health care, equal opportunities for leadership and ending harmful practices, such as child marriages or female genital mutilation.

Promoting Peaceful Inclusive Societies & Addressing The Refugee Crisis

A major goal of the 2030 Agenda was to promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies. Although most of the targets within this goal focus on reducing corruption, etc. it is important to look at what happens to those displaced by unstable societies. The world is currently in the middle of a major migrant and refugee crisis, and part of achieving this goal will be encouraging the integration of displaced persons into just and peaceful countries.
