Speeding the Cure. Spreading the Word. The 2010 Annual Benefit.
On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 the Glaucoma Research Foundation celebrated 32 years of innovation at its Annual Benefit in the historic Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was Honorary California Chairman, and Mayor Gavin Newsom was Honorary San Francisco Chairman. The event Co-Chairs were Nobuko Saito Cleary and Gary Cleary, PharmD, PhD, with Deirdre Porter and Bradford Hall as the Co-Hosts of the Research Overview.
This year’s theme was “Celebrating the Scientists" building on our traditional event title “Speeding the Cure. Spreading the Word.”
Highlights included the presentation of the Catalyst Award to Jeffrey B. Kindler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer Inc. Additional highlights included the ever-popular Research Update from the principal investigators of the Catalyst For a Cure (CFC) research consortium, and the presentation of The Shaffer Prize for Innovative Glaucoma Research to Kate Keller, PhD, as selected by the Glaucoma Research Foundation Science Advisory Committee.
The President's Award acknowledges exemplary volunteer leadership. This year's recipient was Andi Mallinckrodt who, with her business partner Kris Forbes, has designed beautiful décor and floral arrangements for all of our major events. Andi serves on Glaucoma Research Foundation’s Silicon Valley Leadership Council, an all volunteer group dedicated to raising awareness and funds in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
The Visionary Award is presented each year to a seasoned leader with the “vision to see a future free of glaucoma, and the commitment to make that vision a personal priority.” The Award is traditionally presented in the fall prior to the event, with the award recipient acknowledged again at the event. This year’s recipient was Dennis Singleton, who has served on the Board of Directors for eleven years and as the Board Chair from 2003 to 2006. His dedication to the organization is reflected in his charitable leadership and his important committee work.
