Why is a visual field test important?

The value of visual field testing for glaucoma is twofold. First, the test may reveal subtle damage to vision and thus confirm the first diagnosis of glaucoma. Second, the examination provides a baseline to help determine whether or not the pressure control is adequate. A deterioration in visual field, in combination with other findings, may mean more medication or surgery is necessary.
