Laser Report: Repeat SLT Treatment Provides Long-term Reduction of IOP
April, 2006 - At the recent meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) in Boston, ophthalmologist Lawrence F. Jindra, MD reported that repeat Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) treatment provides long-term reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma, allowing patients to use fewer medications.
Dr. Jindra is a glaucoma specialist in private practice in New York and assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Columbia University’s Edward F. Harkness Eye Institute. He and a colleague, Arusha Gupta, MD, presented results of a study of selective laser trabeculoplasty as repeat and long-term treatment for glaucoma.
In his practice, Dr. Jindra has found that SLT is effective in decreasing IOP with a low incidence of complications. He reported that among patients who received a repeat SLT treatment to achieve the desired control of their intraocular pressure, the second procedure significantly decreased the number of pressure-lowering medications needed by patients. Dr. Jindra said that selective laser trabeculoplasty significantly lowered intraocular pressure in his patients and maintained the reduction over three years.
