GRF Brings Glaucoma Awareness to 100 Black Men of America National Conference

June 7, 2006 Atlanta – With glaucoma the leading cause of blindness in African Americans, Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) was pleased to accept an invitation from 100 Black Men of America, Inc. to be part of the Health and Wellness Village at the 100 Black Men of America 20th Annual conference.

GRF’s participation in the annual event was made possible thanks to underwriting from GRF board member Bill Stewart, support from Bill Kindricks (100 Black Men of the Silicon Valley), Keith Quarles (100 Black Men of the Bay Area) and Lee Moultrie II (100 Black Men of Charleston), and the advocacy of 100 Black Men National Health and Wellness Committee co-chairs Mark Alexander MD (100 Black Men of the Bay Area) and James Black DDS (100 Black Men of Los Angeles). Stewart is also a founding member of GRF’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Glaucoma Awareness Initiative leadership committee chaired by Michael L. Penn, Sr.

E. Carmen Torres, GRF’s development coordinator for the HBCU Initiative, staffed the booth distributing glaucoma awareness materials, and fielding questions about the HBCU Initiative.

More than 1400 members and mentees of the 100 Black Men organization attended the Conference at the CNN Omni and Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta. Spanning four days, conference programs ranged from The 100 Fitness Program led daily at 6:30 AM by USA Olympic Gold Medalist Tommy Smith, to a keynote address by Dr. William “Bill” Cosby, philanthropist, educator, entertainer and entrepreneur.

Conference participants attended a full schedule of workshops addressing the 100’s program areas of Mentoring, Scholarship, Health & Wellness, and Economic Development.
