Glaucoma Research Foundation Funding Results in 21 Abstracts at Annual Vision Research Meeting

Promising Research Results Presented at ARVO 2008

The Catalyst for a Cure (CFC) Principal Investigators and their laboratories presented twelve abstracts to their fellow vision researchers at this year’s Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) scientific meeting held annually in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

CFC collaborative research contributed markedly to our understanding of glaucoma disease pathways and reported promising results from an interventional study. In this study, the CFC investigators found that a common dietary supplement, alpha-lipoic acid, reduced retinal ganglion cell loss in a model of glaucoma.

Nine abstracts resulted from Shaffer Grants for Innovative Glaucoma Research, formerly Pilot Project grants, to explore new ideas in glaucoma research. All five of the 2007 awardees presented their research at this year’s conference. Awardees from 2006 and 2005 funding years also presented results, showing the long research time line that is often necessary for innovative work. Thirty-five co-authors were involved with the Pilot Project research, indicating that this grant program is achieving another objective of attracting researchers from other fields into glaucoma.

All-in-all, research funded by the Glaucoma Research Foundation produced 21 abstracts at the annual ARVO meeting.
