Fort Myers Holds First Annual “Shut Out Glaucoma” Event
The City of Fort Myers, Florida is holding a “Shut Out Glaucoma” event at a baseball game on March 6th, 2008. A sell-out crowd of 7,800 is expected at the Ball Park where the Minnesota Twins hold their spring training.
Local eye care specialists are asking fans to shut their eyes to simulate blindness for 34 seconds as a tribute to Kirby Puckett, former Minnesota Twins player whose career ended in 1996 due to glaucoma.
Fort Myers Mayor Jim Humphrey has signed a proclamation for the “Shut Out Glaucoma” event, and Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Florida, local eye care practice, is offering free vision screenings during the month of March. They plan to make this an annual event.
