Be Part of the Wilmoth Family Challenge

The Wilmoth Family

Allow us to introduce you to the Wilmoth Family. Christopher is five. He has glaucoma. Cate and Tess are his older sisters. Cathy and Charlie are their proud parents. The Wilmoths would like you to know how they handle their situation as a family. And their response challenges us all to share their priority commitment to speeding the cure and spreading the word about glaucoma.

The Wilmoth Family Challenge

The Wilmoth Family invites you to make glaucoma research one of your highest funding priorities. "If you donate online today, our family will match your donation $1-for-$1,” said Charlie, “up to total contributions of $5,000 — effectively doubling your donation!”

Inpsired by the Wilmoth Family challenge, a Glaucoma Research Foundation Board Member met their match with another $5,000, so the total pool of matching funds is now $10,000!

Share your reasons for making glaucoma your personal priority, and inspire others to participate as well. Email the Wilmoth Family to share your story and your response will be included in their blog (on this page)!

Make Glaucoma Research a Personal Priority

Recently, Cathy and Charlie invited their friends and neighbors, as well as donors and board members of Glaucoma Research Foundation into their home. The occasion was an opportunity to hear about national trends reflecting the funding priority for innovative glaucoma research. Members of the family spoke, and we know you will be moved by what they had to say.

“I remember when Christopher was diagnosed,” said Charlie. “Our immediate concern was for his quality of life. We’re so gratified that he is such a trooper. His enthusiasm motivates us to be sure that we do everything we can to find a cure for glaucoma. Nobody should have to live with what Christopher is confronting.”

“I was seven years old when my brother was diagnosed, and it scared me a little.” Cate added. “He was only seven months old. But I realized there were things I could do to help.”

My wish is that treatment could be advanced for coming patients.

“I became a patient of the Shaffer group in 1976 after moving to California.

Dr. Hetherington treated me until I moved to Walnut Creek. I go to Diablo Valley Eye Group. Dr. H did trabulectomies about 18 years ago, and my pressure never has gone over 11.

But it is all catching up with me and I am almost legally blind now at 92.

My wish is that treatment could be advanced for coming patients.

Best of luck in your challenge program.

Wilmoth Family Reply

Dear Edith,

We appreciate your support and very kind words. Dr. Hetherington is a neighbor, and recently was a guest in our home for a fundraiser with our family and friends featuring a presentation by Dr. Allen Poirson, GRF’s Director of Scientific Research and Licensing.

We look to build the research, and find a cure for glaucoma.

I am happy to report that Christopher’s glaucoma is controlled, and he is enjoying his kindergarten year in school.

Thank you again,
Cathy
